Joe Scaduto was born September 22, 1935, in Norristown, PA and died on June 25, 2024 in Phoenixville, PA. He was 88 years old.
Joe has described the YMCA swim team as “…the place that prevented me from becoming a juvenile delinquent…” It also was the place where he began to satisfy his inquisitive nature and his love of people.
This curiosity was helpful as he spent four years in the Navy on the USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. (DD-850). It is here where he said that he took in new sights, met people from various places, and “where [he] grew up as a person.” This was also where Joe convinced the ship’s barber to let Joe work under him to learn his lifelong trade. Joe took pride in his work, eventually leading him to work for over sixty years as the owner of Joe Scaduto’s Barbershop (originally Frazer Barbershop). This work allowed him to talk with people from all walks of life – and most importantly, support his family.
But before he had the opportunity to support a family, he met Marge. He is attributed to saying, “I knew I would marry her the first time I met her.” During their 58-year marriage, they raised four children in Phoenixville -- Denise (husband Michael Rife), Joe, Kathleen (husband Ed DiPietro), and Steve (wife Anna Marie Trantas).
He loved his family and adored sharing what he enjoyed with them … From telling quirky jokes, gardening in the backyard, going on random day trips, to crooning songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc. (even if it was too early in the morning at times). He expanded his love of his family as he welcomed seven grandchildren in the form of Larson, Eddie, Nick, Ethan, Parker, Julianna, and Daniel. He enjoyed wrestling and dancing with them, watching the Eagles and the Phillies, teasing them to share his tripe sandwich, and always asking them questions about their thoughts and interests.
Joe’s Catholic faith was important to him. He would examine how he could be a better person to those in his community. He said he did not always get it right – in other words, he was human. In his passing, he is reunited with his wife, Marge. He was also welcomed by his father Accursio, his mother Elizabeth, his sisters Mary and Jennie, and his brothers John and Charlie.
Let’s give Joe Scaduto a round of applause for 88 years of a life well-lived!
