  2. April 23, 1941 – September 8, 2025.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Douglass Spohn, 84, of Birchrunville, PA. A devoted husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, Gary passed away peacefully at home on September 8, 2025, after facing glioblastoma with quiet strength for almost two years. He continued to live fully and actively until the final months, when the illness began to take its toll.

Born in Pottstown, PA, Gary was the son of the late Leon D. and Anne (Badner) Spohn. A gifted athlete, Gary graduated from Owen J. Roberts High School (Class of 1959) and continued his athletic and academic journey at the University of Virginia, where he played basketball on a scholarship and earned his Bachelor’s degree. After college, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Gary enjoyed a long and respected career as a self-employed Financial Advisor, dedicated to helping others navigate life’s important decisions with clarity and care. Beyond his professional work, he found joy in nature, time with family, and other interests. An avid golfer and proud member of Bellewood Golf Club, Gary loved spending time on the course. When not golfing, he could often be found walking or working outdoors, sharing stories and laughs with friends and family, quietly lending a hand to a neighbor, or reading—especially The Message version of the Bible and biographies. He also enjoyed retreating to his home away from home in Florida, especially during the cold Pennsylvania months!

Although he was a man of few words, Gary cared deeply about others. He volunteered with several local organizations—including In Ian’s Boots, Coventry Pantry, and Project HEARTH in Pottstown—serving with humility and quiet commitment to those in need.

He is survived by his loving wife, Katherine (Davis) Spohn, and his two daughters: Brooke S. (wife of Chris McCarty) of Houston, Texas and Stephanie S. (wife of Shayne Fortner) of Dallas, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to Makenzie and Tyson McCarty. He is also survived by his sister, Gayle (wife of the late George Fryling) of Pottstown, his brother, James (husband of Alison Spohn) of Worley, Idaho, and in-laws Carole (wife of Kenneth Styer) of Pottstown and William T. Davis, Jr. husband of Lita Davis) of Oceanside, CA.

Gary’s kindness, generosity, and joyful spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Penn Medicine Hospice for the exceptional care and compassion shown to Gary and to our family in these last few weeks.
